Shutter 0.93 released /2014/08/shutter-0-93-released/ /2014/08/shutter-0-93-released/#comments Sun, 17 Aug 2014 19:24:50 +0000 /?p=1693 This release improves Shutter’s Dropbox integration and adds support for vgy.me.

Improved Dropbox integration

Kudos go to Marco van Hilst who rewrote (and improved/fixed) the existing plugin. Here is why (bug report):

The current Dropbox plugin used the deprecated Public folder functionality of Dropbox. Dropbox dropped support for the Public folder for free accounts that registered after the drop deadline in favor of individual share link creation.

The current Perl library binding for Dropbox’s RESTful HTTP API, Net::Dropbox::API, is old and therefore does not support the new /share and /media functions that generate proper links to the files. Attempting to upload via Dropbox with the plugin in its current state will successfully upload to the Public folder of one’s Dropbox, but will yield an invalid link that will display a 404 when opened in a browser.

Added support for vgy.me

Swooshy wrote an upload script for vgy.me, which is an image hosting service a friend of him made. Thanks!

Shutter 0.90 released /2012/12/shutter-0-90-released/ /2012/12/shutter-0-90-released/#comments Wed, 19 Dec 2012 12:13:51 +0000 /?p=1624 This release fixes bugs and removes some error prone (or unused) features.

Code removal

  • Application

In order to keep Shutter’s codebase easier to maintain we’ve decided to remove some of the error prone features. In fact, we’ve removed the keybinding code (code needs to be written for every single desktop environment) and the Simple Selection Tool (superseeded by the Advanced Selection Tool). I you still want to launch Shutter via hotkey (e.g. Print) we have prepared detailed instructions for the most popular DEs.

  • Plugins

Due to licensing issues it was necessary to remove three plugins (3Dreflection, 3Drotate, bordereffects). The plugins are based on scripts written by Fred Weinhaus and he asked me to remove them from our distribution. If you agree to the license you can still use the plugins. We are preparing a step-by-step-guide.

Improved AppIndicator

This releases adds a new option to show the main window (useful when running Unity).

Shutter 0.88 released /2011/11/shutter-0-88-released/ /2011/11/shutter-0-88-released/#comments Thu, 24 Nov 2011 12:36:42 +0000 /?p=1538 This release improves Shutter’s upload mechanism, adds new features and fixes bugs.

Improved Uploading

Due to the rewrite of major parts of the code it was never easier to write an upload plugin for Shutter. Hence we added a bunch of new image hosting services.

List of new upload plugins

New upload plugins

Shutter does also remember the latest uploads now. See how all this works:

Improved Uploading from Mario Kemper on Vimeo.

Improved CLI-Interface

Is is now possible to specify the filename when using Shutter via command line. Here is an excerpt from Shutter’s manual page:

-o, --output=FILENAME
Specify a filename to save the screenshot to (overwrites any profile-related
   setting).

Supported image formats: You can save to any popular image format (e.g. jpeg, png,
gif, bmp). Additionally it is possible to save to pdf, ps or svg.

Please note: There are several wildcards available, like

	%Y = year
	%m = month
	%d = day
	%T = time
	$w = width
	$h = height
	$name = multi-purpose (e.g. window title)
$nb_name = like $name but without blanks in resulting strings
$profile = name of current profile
	$R = random char (e.g. $RRRR = ag4r)
	%NN = counter

The string is interpretted by strftime. See "man strftime" for more examples.

As an example: shutter -f -e -o './%y-%m-%d_$w_$h.png' would create a file named
   '11-10-28_1280_800.png' in the current directory.

Particularly interesting is the possibility to export directly to PDF without any further processing.

Shutter 0.87.3 released /2011/07/shutter-0-87-3-released/ /2011/07/shutter-0-87-3-released/#comments Mon, 04 Jul 2011 11:11:21 +0000 /?p=1461 Shutter 0.87.3 is mostly a bugfix release, but also adds two useful new features. With this version one of the oldest bugs will be fixed.

Good things come to those who wait

With this version one of the oldest bugs will be fixed. In earlier versions it was not possible to capture the “real” cursor image (the standard cursor was used instead).  In many situations this was an acceptable solution, but it was very annoying when details matter, e.g. when creating manuals.

The new feature in action

Show in folder

Another small – but useful – feature is the Show in folder function. It allows you to open your file browser at the screenshot’s location.

Show in folder

Bugfixes

The other changes are mainly bug fixes that make the experience even better. As an example, Shutter now supports gnome-web-photo >= 0.10 (shipped with Ubuntu 11.04).

Future plans

The next releases (0.88.x) will focus on re-implementing the upload functionality and adding more and more services (e.g. image hosters like imgur.com) to Shutter.

If you’ve subscribed to the Ubuntu repository, you’ll be prompted about an update being available automatically – otherwise, check the downloads page for individual packages. Updates for other distributions will be available soon.

Quicklist support added /2011/03/0-87-2-adds-quicklist-support/ /2011/03/0-87-2-adds-quicklist-support/#comments Fri, 25 Mar 2011 21:44:58 +0000 /?p=1413 We are happy to announce the release of Shutter 0.87.2. If you are using Ubuntu you will like the fact that Shutter now supports Quicklists, i.e. Shutter is already ready for Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).

Read on to see why this is a useful feature and and what else is included in this version.

The Bad News

The traditional notification area will be removed in Ubuntu 11.04 and application authors have to migrate to libappindicator. Currently there are only bindings for C, Python, and Mono. Due to the fact that Shutter is written in Perl there is currently no easy way to implement support for libappindicator. This means that you will not see Shutter’s panel icon in Ubuntu 11.04.

Shutter's icon is NOT visible

Before

The Good News

OMG! UBUNTU! posted a short guide on how to re-enable notification area applets in Ubuntu 11.04. In summary, you only have to follow three simple steps:

  1. Open a terminal and launch the following command:
  2. gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist

  3. You will get something like [‘JavaEmbeddedFrame’, ‘Wine’, ‘Skype’] as a result. Add ‘Shutter’ to this list and save the new setting with the following command
  4. gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist “[‘JavaEmbeddedFrame’, ‘Wine’, ‘Skype’, ‘Shutter’]”

  5. Re-Login and start Shutter

Shutter's icon is now visible

After

If anyone is able to provide Perl bindings for libappindicator, please let me know. Help is highly appreciated.

Even Better News

With support for Quicklists you can put Shutter on Unity’s Launcher and easily access the most common functions. This is how it looks like:

]]> /2011/03/new-bugfix-release-0871/feed/ 2 Shutter is unique! /2011/02/shutter-is-unique/ /2011/02/shutter-is-unique/#comments Tue, 08 Feb 2011 20:14:12 +0000 /?p=1340 We are happy to announce the release of Shutter 0.87. Most of the changes are not visible to users, but there are still a lot of awesome new features that are worth mentioning.

Shutter is unique! Yeah…what does unique mean?

In the past many users have mentioned the fact that it was possible to open more than one instance of Shutter. In order to avoid this behaviour, Shutter now uses LibUnique – a library for writing single instance applications. This brings many advantages to the user for example, an already running instance of Shutter will be opened when opening a file with Shutter in your file browser:

Additionally it is now possible to send messages to an already running instance of Shutter. Hence, it is now very easy to use Shutter in a bash script or to make extended use of keybindings. You can capture a specific window by searching for a title (regular expressions supported):

shutter –window=.*firefox.*

Another example is to capture a specific region of the screen:

shutter -s=100,100,300,300

Please keep in mind that this is only a small subset of all available options. Some more examples are demonstrated in this video:

You might also want to have a look at the new man page where all available parameters are explained.

Capture the last active window

A feature that was missing for a long time was the ability to capture the last active window. This is handy when using it as a hotkey. See how it works:

Rounded window corners for everyone!

Users that are running Compiz (Desktop Effects) know the problem: You are using a nice theme with shaped window corners, but no screenshot taking application is taking this into account. There is no real solution to the problem because Compiz works different than traditional window managers like Metacity, but Shutter offers a nice and flexible workaround now:

When this option is activated Shutter uses fixed parameters to round the window corners. You can overwrite the default parameters by creating a file named ~/.shutter/shape.conf and put custom values in it. The related tooltip explains the needed steps when you want to overwrite the default values, but Shutter also comes with good working default values (at least for standard themes).

See how to enable this option:

Automatically resize windows before capture

A “new-to-the-world” feature is Shutter’s capability of resizing window to a specific size before capturing – and restoring the initial size afterwards. This is very useful when you want to fit all images to a specific width or height (or both!), e.g. when you are writing for a blog or magazine and you have to respect the existing layout.

By using this feature you don’t have to scale you images afterwards (and thus losing quality). Now you can resize the windows you want to capture automatically. Please see the video above to see how things work.

Smaller features

1) It is now possible to adjust the startup behaviour (e.g. automatically launch Shutter at login) via Shutter’s preferences:

2) Shutter also respects the EXIF orientation flag and rotates the image accordingly when displaying it. Shutter does also write the EXIF data back to the images when saving.

3) Additionally it is now possible to export the files to PostScript. This is handy when working with LaTeX.

4) Shutter is now 100% compatible with Unity (and its global menu).

5) Shutter is cluttering your home directory? Activate the option “Do not save file automatically”. Remember: You can still upload and edit your screenshots.

6) There are some new callouts available within the DrawingTool that fit perfectly to the latest Ubuntu / Canonical designs. Thanks to Gregor Fröhlich.

0.86.4 is out! Get it now! /2010/09/shutter-0-86-4-is-out-get-it-now/ /2010/09/shutter-0-86-4-is-out-get-it-now/#comments Sun, 12 Sep 2010 15:24:02 +0000 /?p=1271 We are happy to announce the release of Shutter 0.86.4. This is our last release in the 0.86.x release cycle. The next release will be 0.87. Read on to get more information about the changes and new features.

Capture all workspaces as one image

If you ever wanted to capture your whole desktop – including all workspaces – this feature is for you.

Capture all workspaces

After clicking on the menu entry above Shutter will automatically cycle through all of your workspaces, capture every single one and composes them into one large image (preserving the original layout).

Automatically add a border

Sometimes it is useful to add a border to screenshots, e.g. to separate the white portion of the screenshot and the white background of a document.

This functionality is now built-in. Got to Shutter’s preferences to activate it:

Choose border width and color

This is how a screenshot with auto-border looks like:

Example

New plugins

The hard shadow-plugin is now configurable and allows you to change the direction and the color of the shadow:

Choose direction and color

Autocrop is a completely new plugin. It uses ImageMagick’s convert -trim option to remove empty borders from a screenshot. Grabbing a picture out of a PDF is a good use-case. Here is an example:

Using the autocrop-plugin

Advanced Selection Tool: New shortcuts

On a large display it is sometimes tricky to get start points and end points perfect. Due to that it is now possible to use the keyboard (cursor keys) for grain movement. To start the selection you can now simply hold down Ctrl-Key. Otherwise it could be possible to move the mouse cursor when attempting to left click once the starting point has been positioned exactly with the keyboard.

Launch DrawingTool directly after capture

You can now configure Shutter to use launch the DrawingTool (Edit-Button) directly after taking a screenshot. You simply need to go to Shutter’s preferences and activate this option.
