This release improves Shutter’s upload mechanism, adds new features and fixes bugs.

Due to the rewrite of major parts of the code it was never easier to write an upload plugin for Shutter. Hence we added a bunch of new image hosting services.

Improved CLI-Interface

Is is now possible to specify the filename when using Shutter via command line. Here is an excerpt from Shutter’s manual page:

-o, --output=FILENAME
   Specify a filename to save the screenshot to (overwrites any profile-related
   setting).

   Supported image formats: You can save to any popular image format (e.g. jpeg, png,
   gif, bmp). Additionally it is possible to save to pdf, ps or svg.

   Please note: There are several wildcards available, like

	%Y = year
	%m = month
	%d = day
	%T = time
	$w = width
	$h = height
	$name = multi-purpose (e.g. window title)
	$nb_name = like $name but without blanks in resulting strings
	$profile = name of current profile
	$R = random char (e.g. $RRRR = ag4r)
	%NN = counter

   The string is interpretted by strftime. See "man strftime" for more examples.

   As an example: shutter -f -e -o './%y-%m-%d_$w_$h.png' would create a file named
   '11-10-28_1280_800.png' in the current directory.

Particularly interesting is the possibility to export directly to PDF without any further processing.

If you are using the latest Ubuntu (or any other debian-based distribution) you will notice that some features of Shutter are disabled by default.

You need to install two additional packages to enable these features again:

1. Quit any running instance of Shutter
2. sudo apt-get install libgoo-canvas-perl gnome-web-photo
3. Launch Shutter

Why are those features disabled by default?

These packages are optional dependencies (this means that Shutter is able to start but with restricted functionality) and will be suggested to you when you install the Shutter package but the different tools like apt-get, aptitude, synaptic etc. handle suggested packages differently – at least apt-get does not install them automatically.

There are already some bug reports that are related to this issue but please note: This is not a bug in Shutter - it is just the way the official packages are build. Please use our PPA if you don’t want to install the packages manually.

As Shutter has been touted as an apparent alternative to many Windows solutions (even though that’s not the original intent), it would be great if you people could add your support behind it by “liking” on its webpage. The website supports OpenID login, so registration isn’t a problem!

New icons and cursors in the editor

In order to improve the usability and to help you creating more precise drawings we added a set of new cursors (inpired / borrowed from the inkscape project). Additionally we changed some of the old tool-icons to achieve a much more professional look.

If you are using icons and images to highlight parts of your screenshots as much as I do you’ll like the following changes.

It is now possible to import all possible tango icons (separated by categories), cursors and even icons of your current icon theme.

Before you know it, it looks like a whole year has passed now from the first public revision of GScrot (what Shutter was previously known as) was published on April 9, 2008, at 21:19. Shutter one year old now! It seems that time passed so quickly, so lets look at what was accomplished in the last year.

why was it started

As Mario started to work in the quality assurance department of a local IT-company, he started looking for some a neat screenshot application – because there is a lot of documentation and bug tracking work to be done where screenshots are essential.

There were some apps like ksnapshot, gnome-screenshot etc. but they all focus on a single screenshot; no editing features, no session, no uploading, no nice effects etc. So he started to develop Shutter (formerly gscrot) with these features and goals in mind.

The plugins system was one of the first major features that were implemented. It was now possible to add effects like drop shadows, polaroid etc. to the screenshots. Most of these plugins are still available in the latest version of Shutter.

ubuntu-pics.de was the first image hoster that was supported by the new upload functionality added to Shutter in the following weeks.

Shutter was a little frontend for scrot at first but it moved very fast and while there were more and more feature requests scrot was dropped and a standalone backend was implemented. This step made it possible to add advanced features like the zoom-window, window selection by name and last but not least the advanced selection tool.

Another milestone is the drawing tool that was requested by so many users and was introduced in the 0.6x series of Shutter. There was no need to start image manipulation tools like The Gimp after capturing a screenshot anymore just if you wanted to highlight some thing or add arbitrary graphics to your image.

Shutter 0.70.2 is out, fixing seven discovered issues as reported by our users.

This is the second and last release in the 0.70.x release series; the next 0.80 release will be focusing on improving the drawing tool – including an “Undo” feature, double-clicking to update items, a crop tool and instant-apply for property changes (for example, line width, color, and etc. will be updated as soon as you set a new option – this allows real-time “preview”).

After some suggestions and careful considerations, we’ve now decided to rename GScrot into Shutter. Along with that decision, we now also have a nicer logo (thanks to Pascal Grochol), and a nicer website!

If you’ve been subscribed to our PPA, then you’ll automatically be notified of an upgrade. Otherwise, you can download an updated version of Shutter here, which will replace GScrot. Instead of GScrot in Applications→Accessories, you’ll now see Shutter

I am currently working very hard on the new version of GScrot including the new Drawing Tool.
The new tool is based on the great GooCanvas Library (see http://live.gnome.org/GooCanvas). Therefore it offers many advantages in comparison with the old tool, e.g. full alpha-channel support.

Because pictures say more than a thousand words, here is a little preview:

Hopefully i will be able to release the final version of GScrot 0.64 before christmas.

There were several requests for integrating a flickr upload to GScrot in the last weeks.

Well, why should we reinvent the wheel when there already are pretty good solutions to do such a thing? An application I like very much is Postr by Ross Burton (http://burtonini.com/blog/computers/postr).

It is very easy to use and integrates well in the Gnome- or XFCE-Desktop. There are just a few steps to integrate postr into GScrot.

1. Installation of Postr using apt-get (of course you can use synaptic, aptitude etc. as well)


open a terminal and install Postr using the following command: sudo apt-get install postr

2. Configure Gscrot (Edit>>Preferences – Advanced>>Open with)
   

   Choose Flickr Uploader from the list. Activate the checkbox if you want to open your screenshot automatically with Postr after every single capture.

3. Take screenshot(s) and open them with Postr
   

   Just use the open button to open your screenshot(s) with the configured application (Postr in this case).

4. That’s it!
   

   As you can see all three screenshots were exported to Postr. You can now just use Postr...
